skid
A skid is a steel runner or base fitted to a container so it can be towed, dragged or slid across a yard. Quick-attach skids bolt to the box. Oilfield skids are a heavier, full version. The word also has other uses in trade.
Why it matters
Skids let operators and job site crews move a container without a crane or a truck bed. Bolt-on skids give a smooth contact point on the ground. They suit yards and job sites where a box needs small moves. A common mistake is to mix up the skid with the pallet-style skid used in shipping. In container work it means a runner or base. Skids also do not replace proper ground prep. Soft or uneven ground can still cause damage. Ask whether the skid is rated for the box weight, and whether it bolts on or needs welding, before you buy.

container modification
A container modification is a change made to a standard shipping container. It covers a single door cut-in up to a full fit-out. Common changes include doors, windows, vents, insulation, electrical work, HVAC, lining, partitions and plumbing. Sellers often group these changes into packages.
tilt-bed truck
A tilt-bed truck has a bed that tilts down toward the ground. A winch pulls a container onto or off the bed. It places a 20 ft or 40 ft container on the ground without a crane or forklift. It is the most common delivery truck in portable storage.
winch
A winch is a mechanical device that pulls in or lets out a rope or cable on a drum. On a tilt-bed truck, a winch pulls a container up onto the bed or lets it slide down to the ground in a controlled way.
gravel pad
A gravel pad is a prepared base of crushed stone or gravel placed on the ground for a container to sit on. Conexwest calls a compacted gravel pad one of the most practical base options for many storage containers because it improves drainage and is generally easier to install than concrete.
compacted base
A compacted base is a layer of soil or crushed stone that has been pressed down so it is firm and stable. It sits under a container to carry the weight and resist settling. Conexwest notes that some sites need compaction, stone, piers or professional soil review before placement.
ramp door
A ramp door is a door that lets vehicles or equipment roll into a container or trailer. Some fold down as a ramp. In container work, the term can also mean a separate ramp used at the door. Sellers use the term in different ways.
