Delivery equipment
roll-off truck
A roll-off truck is a truck with a cable hoist and tilting rails that pulls a container or dumpster onto its frame and rolls it off. Roll-off trailers also exist. Some operators use them to move storage containers. It is common in waste hauling and some container work.
Why it matters
Roll-off equipment is common in waste hauling, and some portable storage operators use it for containers too. It can load and unload on its own, which suits tight yards. Not every container fits a roll-off rail system. Many are built to roll-off specs with rails and hook points, while standard ISO boxes may need a different method. A common mistake is to assume any roll-off truck can handle any container. Check the rail, the hook point, the lift capacity and the length. Ask the equipment maker for ratings. Compare roll-off with tilt-bed use for your fleet and sites before you buy.

tilt-bed truck
A tilt-bed truck has a bed that tilts down toward the ground. A winch pulls a container onto or off the bed. It places a 20 ft or 40 ft container on the ground without a crane or forklift. It is the most common delivery truck in portable storage.
winch
A winch is a mechanical device that pulls in or lets out a rope or cable on a drum. On a tilt-bed truck, a winch pulls a container up onto the bed or lets it slide down to the ground in a controlled way.
side loader
A side loader is a trailer with two lifting arms that picks up a container, carries it and sets it on the ground or on another trailer. It can lift from the side, so it needs less room at the front or back.
crane truck
A crane truck is a truck with a crane mounted on the bed or chassis. It lifts a container off a trailer, over fences or onto a tight spot. It is also called a boom truck or loader crane truck.
chassis
A chassis is a skeletal semi-trailer built to carry a container. It has twistlocks at the corners that lock into the container's corner castings. Chassis are used with tractors to move containers on roads between ports, rail yards and depots.
skid
A skid is a steel runner or base fitted to a container so it can be towed, dragged or slid across a yard. Quick-attach skids bolt to the box. Oilfield skids are a heavier, full version. The word also has other uses in trade.
