Container basics

storage container

A storage container is a container used to store goods, often a retired shipping container, that sits on a site and keeps items dry and secure. Companies rent or sell them in several sizes and conditions. Many have double doors on one end and can be lifted or moved on a truck.

Why it matters

People use storage containers at homes, job sites, farms, stores and businesses. They choose by size, condition and access needs. Sellers describe units as new, one-trip, cargo worthy, wind and water tight or as-is, and those grades change price and appearance. A common mistake is to pick on price alone and ignore delivery. The truck needs a clear path and a level, firm spot for the container, and some towns require permits. Another mistake is to store items that need climate control in a plain steel box. Ask the provider about options such as insulation, shelving, locks and a delivery plan before you commit.

Related terms

portable storage container

A portable storage container is a container made for rent or sale as movable storage. NPSA describes portable storage containers as ISO shipping containers retired from international shipping and offered on the domestic market. In practice the term also covers other portable units.

shipping container

A shipping container is a standardized steel box used to move freight by ship, rail and truck without unloading the goods. Most are rectangular, closed boxes with doors at one end. Many are reused for storage after their sea service ends.

used container

A used container is a container that has served a working life, usually at sea, before being sold or rented for storage. Sellers grade used units, often as cargo worthy, wind and water tight or as-is. The grade affects price, appearance and how well the unit keeps out water.

wind and water tight (WWT)

Wind and water tight is a trade term for a used container that should have no holes or defects that let wind or water in. It is not certified by an outside body. The seller decides whether a unit meets it, so definitions vary by company.

site preparation

Site preparation is the work done on a spot before a container arrives. It includes clearing the access path, checking overhead room, making the ground firm and fairly level, and sometimes adding a gravel or stone base. The goal is a safe drop and a unit that sits flat.

HOA covenant

An HOA covenant is a rule in the recorded declaration of a homeowners association, often called CC&Rs for covenants, conditions and restrictions. It limits how owners may use their property. The rules bind all owners in the community and can cover things like parked vehicles, alterations and storage items.
