refrigerated trailer
A refrigerated trailer, or reefer trailer, is an insulated trailer with a transport refrigeration unit. It keeps food, medicine and other temperature-sensitive goods cold or frozen. Unlike a refrigerated container, it attaches to a tractor and rides on its own wheels.
Why it matters
Thermo King says reefer trailers move fresh, frozen and other temperature-sensitive products over short or long distances. Some rental companies also offer them as extra cold storage for events, grocery stores and food service, parked on site. A common mistake is to assume the unit will cool warm goods quickly. Pre-cool the trailer, and load products that are already at the right temperature. Another mistake is to forget fuel or power for the refrigeration unit. Food moved by truck may fall under FDA sanitary transportation rules, so ask your provider about temperature records and cleaning.

temperature controlled storage
Temperature-controlled storage is a space that holds goods within a set temperature range. It may be refrigerated, frozen or heated. Examples include a cold room, a reefer container or a refrigerated trailer used to keep food, medicine or other sensitive products safe.
reefer container
A reefer container is a refrigerated container with its own cooling unit and temperature controls. It keeps cargo at a set temperature. Carrier specs list reefers in 20-foot and 40-foot high cube sizes with smaller inside dimensions than dry containers.
insulated container
An insulated container is a container with insulation on its walls and roof to slow heat transfer. In portable storage, insulation is often added to a standard steel box, for example with spray foam. It differs from a reefer, which has a refrigeration unit.
storage trailer
A storage trailer is a trailer used as a movable storage space instead of for hauling cargo from place to place. It has a floor, walls, a roof and doors at one end or both. NPSA members rent, lease and sell storage trailers, often in standard lengths from 28 to 53 feet.
semi-trailer
A semi-trailer is a trailer built so that part of its weight rests on the truck that pulls it. Federal motor carrier rules define a semitrailer as a motor vehicle, other than a pole trailer, that another motor vehicle draws and that bears partly on the towing vehicle.
container HVAC
Container HVAC is a heating, cooling and ventilation system fitted to a shipping container. It is used when people work in the box or when contents need a steadier temperature. It usually goes with insulation and electrical work. Systems and sizes vary by seller and use.
