# keynote

A keynote is the main speech at a conference, usually given by a featured speaker to the whole audience. It sets the theme for the event. At the NPSA conference, keynotes are on the main schedule and are separate from smaller concurrent sessions.

## Why it matters

For the 2026 NPSA conference in San Antonio, NPSA listed two keynotes on Monday, one by author Ross Bernstein on integrity and accountability, and one by Sam Richter on generative AI. Keynotes tend to be broad, so the value is ideas and inspiration more than detailed how-to. A common mistake is to treat a keynote as a product demo. Good keynotes teach something the whole room can use. Operators can pair the big idea with smaller sessions that go deeper. Speaker lists change from year to year, so check the current schedule.
