# container modification

A container modification is a change made to a standard shipping container. It covers a single door cut-in up to a full fit-out. Common changes include doors, windows, vents, insulation, electrical work, HVAC, lining, partitions and plumbing. Sellers often group these changes into packages.

## Why it matters

Modifications turn a basic steel box into a shop, an office, a cold room or a living space. Operators who sell or rent modified units can earn more per box and meet more needs. Each system, such as electrical, HVAC or plumbing, adds cost, labor and build time. A common mistake is to modify a box without checking its structure. Cuts weaken walls unless the frame is reinforced. Occupied units can also trigger building, electrical and zoning review, so check state and local rules. Start with the end use, then choose the condition of box and the changes that match it.
