# container insulation

Container insulation is material added to the walls, roof and floor of a shipping container to slow heat flow and reduce condensation. The choice of system affects comfort and cost. It is often paired with lining and HVAC. Types and thickness vary by seller.

## Why it matters

A bare steel box heats up in the sun and gets cold in winter. Insulation helps keep the inside more stable, which matters for offices, workshops and storage of sensitive items. Operators offer several systems, and each has a different cost and thickness. A common mistake is to add insulation without managing moisture. Trapped water can cause rust and mold. Insulation also takes inside space, so inside dimensions shrink. High cube units are popular for conversions because the extra height leaves room for insulation and a ceiling. Ask what material is used, how it is sealed and what the finished inside size will be.
