# compacted base

A compacted base is a layer of soil or crushed stone that has been pressed down so it is firm and stable. It sits under a container to carry the weight and resist settling. Conexwest notes that some sites need compaction, stone, piers or professional soil review before placement.

## Why it matters

Soft ground can let one corner of a container sink, which can twist the frame and make the doors hard to open. Compacting the base lowers that risk. Equipment such as a plate compactor or roller does the work, and the soil must be graded first. A common mistake is to think a lawn is firm enough. Grass over soft soil often is not, and wet weather makes it worse. Operators may refuse a drop if the ground looks unsafe for the truck. Customers should ask what base the provider expects for their unit and their soil.
