# Seasonal demand in portable storage: Moving season, retail peaks and hurricane prep

October 16, 2026 · 4 min read · National Portable Storage Association

Portable storage demand follows the calendar. Moving demand runs May through August, with June the busiest month. Retail storage needs build before the November-December holiday season. Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. Plan fleet, drivers and bookings around these windows, and test them against your own records.

## When is moving season for portable storage?

Moving season runs from May through August, and June is the busiest month. HireAHelper, a moving marketplace, says 45% of the moves in its data happen from May to August. Its guide says movers, rental trucks and moving containers are in the highest demand then.

The American Trucking Associations ties the season to National Moving Month. Its April 2026 release says more than two million Americans move between states from May to September.

Both sources describe moving in general. They are not NPSA data, and they do not measure container rentals. Treat them as context. Your own order history is the better guide for your market, so use these figures to ask questions, not to set targets.

## How big is the summer swing?

Example estimate, not a quote, using HireAHelper’s 45% figure:

So a typical peak month is about 1.6 times a typical off month, in that dataset. Your market may differ. Weather, college calendars and military moves all shift the curve. Compare it with your own order history.

## When do retailers need storage trailers?

Retail demand builds before the holiday season. The National Retail Federation defines that season as November 1 through December 31. Its 2025 forecast expected sales growth of 3.7% to 4.2% over 2024 for November and December.

That forecast is for retail sales, not trailer rentals. The link to your trailers is a planning assumption. Stores that expect more goods need space earlier. Check your past bookings to confirm. For tips written for that customer, see [storage trailers for retail peak season](https://npsa.preview.multisites.ai/blog/storage-trailers-retail-peak-season).

## Does hurricane season affect demand?

It can. NOAA says the Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30. The peak is September 10, with most activity from mid-August to mid-October.

No public figure shows how storms change container demand. So treat this as a planning question, not a rule. Look at your own past storm periods. Ask what you rented, to whom, and how fast units moved.

Hurricane season overlaps the end of moving season. The same drivers and trucks may be wanted in two places at once. That is worth a conversation with your dispatcher before August, not during a storm watch.

## How should an operator plan fleet by season?

Plan from your own numbers first. Then use outside data to check your instincts. A simple calendar helps.

## Where can you compare notes?

NPSA members share practice in the [community forum](https://npsa.preview.multisites.ai/community-forum). It has categories for storage trailers, refrigerated units and general business. The [training video library](https://npsa.preview.multisites.ai/training-video-library) is another resource.

One habit helps most: write down your own monthly utilization for the last three years before you buy fleet. Buying for a season without that data is a guess.

## How does the calendar affect booking and pricing?

HireAHelper says the beginning and end of the month are busier, because of leases and closings. It also says weekends fill quickly. Customers get the same advice, so more of them ask for mid-month weekday slots.

For an operator, that suggests a few steps. These are suggestions, not tested rules:

- Set delivery windows by day so you can see when the calendar fills.
- Offer a flexible mid-month or weekday slot to customers who can use it.
- Review your [minimum rental term](https://npsa.preview.multisites.ai/glossary/minimum-rental-term) before peak weeks.
- Track calls you turn away. That is your own record of lost demand.

Prices vary by market and provider. Decide pricing policy from your own costs, not from a headline.

## What data should you collect for your own season?

Keep a simple monthly table for each product. After three years you will see your own curve.

Questions

## Common questions

When is moving season?

HireAHelper's data puts peak moving season at May through August, when 45% of moves happen, with June the busiest month. The American Trucking Associations ties the season to National Moving Month and says more than two million Americans move between states from May to September. These are general moving figures, not NPSA data.

When is demand highest for storage trailers?

Retail demand centers on the holiday season. The National Retail Federation defines it as November 1 through December 31. Retailers likely need trailers in place before that period starts, so bookings may come earlier. This is a planning assumption, not a published figure. Check your own booking dates to see your local pattern.

How do operators plan fleet by season?

Start from your own history. Look at utilization by month and by product, then line up buying, repair and driver schedules before the peak. Use outside data only as a cross-check. NPSA's forum has categories for storage trailers and refrigerated units where peers share experience.

How does disaster response affect demand?

The Atlantic hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, with a peak around September 10, according to NOAA. No public figure shows how much storms raise demand for containers. Review your own past storm periods before you plan to hold fleet in reserve.
